Only a few chemicals react with it. Its mechanical properties are moderate compared to other elastomers, but its properties remain at a useful level over a great temperature range — from -75 to 450°F (-60 to 232°C).

Silicone rubber has excellent thermal and electrical insulation properties. And, it has a high resistance to weathering and ozone. It is difficult to make anything adhere to silicone rubber. A material may stick to it, but the material can be peeled off or rubbed off.

Silicone rubber was one of the first synthetic rubbers. It is the most biocompatible elastomer known. Mechanical properties can be improved by the addition of fillers such as silica, carbon black, and alumina trihydrate.
