Key Attributes of Polyester (PET) Sheet:
Polyethylene Terephthalate is an ideal material well known for its versatile characteristics. It is widely used in the industry for its eco-friendly processing and recyclability. It comprises a unique set of chemical, mechanical, and physical properties. This makes it suitable over glass, nylon, and polyethylene. The key properties of polyester sheets include:
Mechanical properties
- Strength - Polyester maintains high tensile strength between -60°C to 150°C. They are highly durable and resistant to tearing.
- High Dimensional Stability - PET has excellent dimensional stability that makes it resistant to stretching and shrinking. It provides reliability and performance in applications that demand consistent shape and size. The polymer has a density of 1.3 - 1.4.
Optical properties
- Clarity - PET is a clear plastic that can transmit up to 90% of visible light, comparable to some types of glass. Polyester sheets are available in various thicknesses and finishes. These sheets can be customized depending on the end-user application.
- Optical Nature - For having a semi-crystalline structure, PET offers good optical properties. The refractive index of clear polyester is approximately 1.57.
Physical properties
- Lightweight - This feature allows for versatile design possibilities for manufacturers compared with heavier materials. The property increases efficiency and makes the production process easier. It also reduces overall material costs.
- Resistance to UV Degradation - Polyester can be stabilized to resist degradation from ultraviolet radiation. They provide good protection against UV-induced deterioration.
- Chemical Resistance - Excellent chemical resistance against weak acids, oils, and alcohols. It shows moderate resistance against alkalis and some solvents. PET is susceptible to degradation by strong acids and bases. Manufacturers recommend cleaning PET using agents which do not affect their chemical nature. It is sensitive to certain organic solvents.
- Heat Resistance - Polyester sheets have good heat resistance. They are thermally stable up to about 150°C. Further heat resistance can be achieved by modifying the polymer structure without significantly impacting other material properties.
