G10/FR-4 is a thermosetting composite material that consists of woven fiberglass fabric, epoxy resin.
When comparing FR4 and G10, the main distinction lies in their flame-resistant qualities; you can think of FR4 as G10 with enhanced fire-resistant properties.
FR4 laminates have high mechanical strength, excellent electrical insulation, low moisture absorption, dimensional stability, a low dielectric constant, and moderate thermal conductivity. The FR4 material offered by DoonX has high resistance to thermal stress, excellent electrical performance, a low coefficient of thermal expansion and outstanding flame retardancy among composite materials.
Properties of G-10/FR-4 Materials
FR4 offers a unique combination of mechanical, chemical, electrical, and thermal properties. Knowing the distinctive features of FR4 is critical to help you select the right grade for your application. Let’s take a look at the unique features of FR4 composite.
Physical properties
- FR4 is a glass-reinforced epoxy laminate material, widely used in printed circuit boards.
- Its composite structure imparts excellent resistance to moisture absorption and dimensional stability.
- FR4 is resistant to many common solvents and does not degrade significantly under normal operating conditions.
- Used for extended periods in various electronic applications without significant property degradation. Hence, FR4 has excellent reliability in diverse environmental conditions.
- FR4 has good machinability, inherent flame retardancy, and electrical insulation properties.
Mechanical properties
FR4 composite shows excellent mechanical properties.
- FR4 and G10 exhibit high flexural strength and rigidity due to their glass fiber reinforcement.
- The material also exhibits good impact resistance. When combined with its tensile and compressive characteristics, it provides an excellent balance of properties. For example, where the material is required to withstand mechanical stresses in electronic assemblies.
- FR4 maintains its mechanical integrity across a wide range of temperatures.
- Components made with FR4 are relatively lightweight. They can perform reliably in various electronic and electrical applications.
Thermal properties
FR4 and its variants are suitable for a wide range of temperature applications. These include consumer electronics, industrial equipment, and telecommunications devices. The thermal properties which FR4 composite exhibits include:
- High glass transition temperature (Tg), typically around 130-140°C
- Good thermal stability up to its glass transition temperature
- Ability to withstand multiple heat cycles during soldering processes
Electrical properties
- FR4/G10 composite exhibits high dielectric strength and low dielectric constant.
- FR4 maintains good insulating properties across a wide range of frequencies and environmental conditions.
Flammability
- FR4 sheet has a V0 flammability rating as per UL94 standards.
- FR4 is inherently flame retardant due to its epoxy resin composition and the addition of flame retardants.
- It produces minimal smoke and toxic gases when exposed to flame, enhancing safety in electronic applications.
